

As a lifelong, keen naturalist, AAJ took great interest in the flora and fauna of the region. He encouraged anyone with artistic talent among the prisoners to make drawings or paintings of specimens, despite the dearth of art supplies. There was also a danger of punishment if discovered engaged in such activities, so AAJ hid the paintings in a natural history book he had managed to acquire and keep in his possession. As well as this, he decided to make a collection of tropical butterflies ……….



Below are recent photographs of the collection of butterflies which AAJ brought back with him from Siam, and which is looked after by his eldest daughter, Wendy, to this day.
